GEF project development in Jordan and Egypt: Team leadership role in the Project Preparation Grant (PPG) for the project: “Healthy Ecosystems for Rangeland Development (HERD): sustainable rangeland management strategies and practices”
Preparation of a UNEP GEF Project Document for IUCN ROWA, the designated executing partner for this project on behalf of UNEP. Project HERD aims to restore and sustainably manage pastoral rangelands to enhance ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation in Jordan and Egypt. Through six targeted outcomes across four components, HERD seeks to institutionalize rangeland monitoring systems, support inclusive governance covering approximately 500,000 hectares, promote community-led planning aligned with global tenure guidelines, and encourage adoption of SRM practices while catalyzing broader policy and investment support for sustainable pastoralism. This was our first project in the Middle East. We helped the clients mobilize more than $3.5M from GEF in addition to $13M+ in co-financing.
